Finally, we’re still watching whether former President Donald Trump’s new social media platform “Truth Social” will launch on Monday (Presidents Day). Recent reports have said the platform may not launch until March, though the app still has an expected Feb. 21 release date on Apple Inc.’s App Store, and a Reuters story cited two sources who said at least 500 beta testers have started using an early version of the platform.
Why it matters: Truth Social would be Trump’s largest return to social media after many platforms suspended or permanently banned his accounts following the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Social media played a significant role in Trump’s rise as a presidential candidate and in many cases served as the unofficial news hub for new White House and administration policies. Truth Social could also get Trump’s voice out to more people as he likely plans to run for the presidency again in 2024.
