Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Meta Platforms Inc. and Twitter will be among the tech companies required to have policies to combat deepfakes and fake accounts or risk heavy fines under an updated European Union code of practice on disinformation, according to an E.U. document seen by Reuters. The European Commission published the updated code in a bid to counter fake news, with what was once a voluntary code now becoming a co-regulation model that pushes companies and government officials to share responsibility for its implementation.
